Many businesses and organisations in New Zealand & throughout the Pacific know that they need a strategy to help grow the business and to create wealth, but they either don't know where to start, or are concerned at the cost of developing one. And that is where we come in.
Ask academics, managers or even top executives and you'll quickly discover that there is no one simple answer. Our belief is that strategy is all about focusing energy and resources, strengthening operations and setting priorities in such a way that you not only survive the battle, but you win the war.
It is a disciplined process that produces fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organisation is, where it is going in the future, and how it is going to get there.
Let's face it. It's a tough world out there right now, and as an organisation or business, you are trying to prosper in a competitive environment. A business which is good at operations but is without a strategy may do well for a while, but sooner or later it will fall victim to a competitor or a change in the environment. A good strategy doesn't in itself guarantee success, but it certainly stacks the odds in your favour.
Take home message:
"Business strategy and business performance are correlated"
Congratulations - that's a great start, but I'd like to ask you where is your strategy now? Not infrequently, we find that businesses and organisations have at some stage in the past developed a strategy, but when they are asked to produce it, they have to retrive it from the back of a bookshelf and dust it off.
Strategy is a process of continuously adjusting to a fast changing environment. While the longer term goal or objective remains valid, we need to periodically reflect on progress, priorities and problems that need to be resolved. It's critical to ensure that our view of the world accurately reflects changes in the environment around us.

Lessons from Lewis Carroll
There are many children in New Zealand that have read, or at least have heard of the fairy tale 'Alice in Wonderland'.
There is a real gem hidden inside the story. At one point, Alice asked the Mad Hatter 'can you please tell me how to get to Wonderland', to which the Mad Hatter responded, 'that depends'. Not to be deterred, Alice asked the same question a second time, only to receive the same response, 'that depends'.Asking the question and receiving the same response a third time, Alice responded, "....'that depends?....depends on what?'. The Mad Hatter replied 'it depends on where you are now!'.
In developing strategies or plans, we often rush straight into defining where we want to go.....our destination, whereas it is equally important to understand where we are at present and how we got here, because it is only then that we can clearly answer the question 'how to get to where we want to be'.
